We are working with Tesco on a pilot at their Huntly store in Scotland. They use our Hot Food Service alongside other vending machines which supply sandwiches, drinks, etc, after having removed their manned staff canteen. They saved a five figure sum in staff costs alone by replacing their cook and two catering assistants with one part-time assistant. As Tesco self manage their facility, their assistant, who works 2 hours per day, cleans the canteen area and replenishes the vending machines. This store, like others targeted for the changeover, has 200 staff working 24/7. As this site is self managed, Bon Appetit simply deliver the stock required once a month to an on-site chest freezer. The project manager considers the 3 main benefits of the change to be:
* Substantial costs savings
* New service is available 24/7, not just the old canteen hours
* No wastage, as the food is frozen. A key benefit given the concern within the catering trade with the cost of food wastage.
Tesco use some of the saving to subsidise the food cost for staff.
Stubbins, who supply fresh vegetables to Supermarkets, operate a 24/7 distribution site with 206 staff from Waltham Forest, beside the M25. Their canteen operated 9 - 5, Monday to Friday. Apart from being costly to run, it did not provide a 24/7 hot food service that the staff required. They selected the Fully Managed Package, as they wanted to fully outsource the facility and maximize the savings realised from closing the canteen. The Package consisted of 2 Vending Machines (co-joined), 2 Microwave Cabinets & 4 Microwaves, on a 3 year lease rental agreement. In addition to Bon Appetit’s Hot Food Service they also installed a sandwich vending machine and upgraded their drinks vending facilities. The company subsidise the prices to staff by 20%, as they take the view that they are already enjoying substantial savings from closing the canteen, so they want the staff to join in some of the benefits.
